RESEARCH & LEARNING PARTNER FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT (ECD) AND LIVELIHOODS PROJECT IN URBAN KAMPALA AND REFUGEE SETTLEMENTS IN UGANDA 

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS CALL FOR APPLICATION

 

Introduction: The AfriChild Centre, Makerere University received a grant to support the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) to undertake research and conduct learning for the NRC Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Livelihoods Project in southwestern refugee settlements (Isingiro & Kyangwali) and Kampala in Uganda.

Project Aim: To contribute to the economic inclusion of displacement-affected youth in Uganda.

Project objectives

1.     Youth are better equipped to engage in livelihood opportunities and contribute to their communities

2.     Children (0-6 years) have improved health and nutrition, social, emotional and cognitive development and readiness to learn Outcome

 

Project scope: This project implements a dual-generation approach to provide vocational skills training skills and business development to out-of-school youths while providing direct early childhood care interventions for the children of youths enrolled in the project. The project is being implemented in Kyangwali and Isingiro settlements; and in Kampala, among refugee communities.

Duration of the assignment: The data collection is anticipated to take 3 weeks comprised of 1 week of Research Assistant training and 2 weeks of data collection.

About the desired candidate

 The desirable candidate for this position should possess the following skills and experience: 

a)     At least a bachelor’s degree in education, anthropology, health-related course, community development or any other related course.

b)     Experience in community engagement, conduct of surveys and qualitative data collection.

c)     Experience conducting early childhood development studies specifically focusing on education, livelihoods and health.

d)    Proficiency in both written and spoken English and locally spoken languages among the refugees such as Kiswahili, Kinyabwisha, Kigerere, Runyoro/Rutoro/Rukiga

e)   Demonstrate understanding of child protection issues, and social-cultural context while working with refugee communities.

f)     A proven competency in child-focused research methods and ethics. 

g)     Experience in audio transcription for qualitative research

h)   Team player who can use their strengths for the successful execution of the assignment.

 

Reporting: The consultant(s) will be supervised by the Research Coordinator or his designate at The AfriChild Centre.

Responsibilities of the Research Assistant

The Research assistant shall perform the following core functions in the implementation of this evaluation assignment:

a)     Attend all days of the interviewer training

b)     Participate in tools review and pretesting activities.

c)   Conduct all survey and qualitative interviews that have been assigned in the selected settlements

d)     Conduct verbatim transcription of all audio recordings allocated

e)     Participate in daily planning and debriefing meetings

f)      Actively participate in writing of the field report for the settlement (s) assigned
